The Family Sedan Debate…Buying a Used Sedan for Under $20k

Raising a family is one of the most rewarding things we can do in life. The reality is that it can also be quite the financial challenge. The mortgage, taxes and groceries add up fast! Who has the money left over for large car payments? I know I don’t. So let’s talk about three sedans under $20,000 that are stylish, sporty and reliable for the long haul. A couple may be obvious choices but hopefully we’ll surprise you with one or two goodies as well.

Dodge Charger

The introduction of the modern Dodge Charger was a turning point in that it once again legitimized the American family sedan. It along with other models like the Chevrolet Malibu have paved the way for a new group of “Big Three”models that easily compete with other offering from around the world.

This Dodge Charger will come standard with a well sized V6. I’ve driven this car before and I fell in love with it immediately! It’s fast enough for most car buyers and handles with precision. If you disagree and feel that you need more speed, opt for one of the V8 options.

At first I thought the Dodge Charger was too big, but then I quickly got a feel for the size of the car and the rest was history. This is definitely a great family sedan being that it is one of the larger models in the general sedan class.

 Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima is a perennial favorite in this debate alongside the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. At this point in the debate those other choices have become a little stale. Now that’s not to take anything away from them…they have been and continue to be solid choices, and have been since at least the early 80s if not earlier.

Fact is that the Nissan Altima is different. It was introduced in the 90s. It took off when it released its third generation for the 2002 model year, and it hasn’t looked back since. It didn’t take very long to match the Accord and Camry in the style and performance categories. Some say, the Altima has now surpassed them in style and performance, making the Altima a newer fan favorite in this segment. And what’s the best part? A two year old Altima starts at less than $12k! What a steal!!

Hyundai Genesis

Surprise! I don’t think any of you saw this one coming. Maybe you would’ve guessed that the Sonata would be on the list, but when the criteria are this lax I couldn’t help but include a diamond in the rough! And this is definitely a diamond. It starts with receiving the remainder of the 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. It comes standard with a 3.8L V6 and has an optional V8, not that you’ll really need it anyway. Here’s some of the other awesome features of this amazing under $20k ride: leather seating, leather wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, heated rear seats(!), power seats, and the list goes on and on! For a second there I thought I was describing a high end Cadillac DTS or CTS, but alas I am discussing an affordable, lightly used Hyundai Genesis!

Conclusion

There are many great used sedans available today. The sedan segment is anything but boring. It turns out that there are too many great sedans to discuss and therefore we cannot discuss all of them here today. The Ford Fusion, Ford Taurus, Volkswagen Passat and Buick Verano are great options as well. Bottom line is that you should find a great used sedan that speaks to you and scoop it up!
